Ecumenical service and mass march against liberalisation in the clothing industry in Cape Town

A major march highlighting how trade liberalisation has led to job losses and a crisis in the clothing industry in Cape Town/South Africa over the last 10 years - focusing on the potential closure of Rex Trueform.

The service will start at 1 O'clock and at around 1.45 the procession will move from St.George's Cathedral (Anglican Church) in Wale Street via Plein Street, past the Parliamentary Buildings to St.Mary's Cathedral (Catholic Church).

There will also be a meeting with the Minister of Trade to share the concerns of Religious leaders and the Church.

Panel discussion - 11 April
Representatives from business, churches, Government and the Civil Society will discuss how trade liberalisation has brought about low wages, exploitation of workers and lack of access to drugs for diseases including HIV/AIDS.

Trade Indaba - 13 April
Presentations will be made on how trade liberalisation is impacting on the lives of the people and our local economies.

Handing in of shoes to Provinical minsters
Handing over of shoes to the Provincial ministers. This is to respond to closure of the shoe industries because of trade liberalisation.

Other events throughout the week

  • Community Workshops on Trade liberalisation.
  • Workshops and Bible study with various Churches to prepare and mobilise them for the Global week of Action.
  • Theatrical perfomances in communities, churches and on the street to popularise the Week of Action.

Ecumenical service

The service will launching the churches’ Just & Fair Trade Campaign.

It will include praying for victims of unjust trade policies and practices in South Africa and around the world, Highlighting the impact of current trade regimes on the lives of ordinary people in South Africa and around the world and encouraging people to become advocates for a more just global trade regime
